The Short North |

pm gallery was established in 1980 in an area just north of downtown Columbus, Ohio that is now called the Short North - known as an arts district. In 1980 the area was known as a place to avoid. Derelict people and buildings, poor infrastructure and low rents attracted artists and galleries willing to take a chance on change. It took awhile, and the area is still evolving, but now galleries, restaurants, boutiques, antique and specialty stores have replaced the vacant storefronts and strip clubs. The monthly Gallery Hop has done much to introduce the Short North to wary suburbanites and is now the premier cheap date in the city. It is ALWAYS the first Saturday of the month - even on holidays or snow emergencies from 6:00 to ? (it depends on the gallery/business - some close at 9, some at 10 - we close when we get down to two couples, usually around 11).

We opened in 1980, attracted to the area by the glimmerings of an arts district. In the early years we carried our own work - Michael's paintings and Maria's candles, as well as the work of a few friends. Maria did all the store watching accompanied by store dogs Sadie and Toby (two very mellow Irish setters). These days Michael still paints (occasionally), Maria is doing more jewelry and lampworked glass beads. As the years went on we picked up more artists, from all over the country (and a small handful from Canada). Now we represent over 300 artists and craftmen.
We helped start the Gallery Hop in 1984, which was an amazing tool for promoting the Short North. It got people down here after dark. In great masses. We also had two boys, who were store kids for awhile, especially Eli (he's in 6th grade now). And we have a store dog again, a German shorthair pointer mix named Logan.
The thing that continues to amaze me is the limitless creativity that is out there. I know that we have tapped a very small fraction. I hope you like what we have found. |
